Tour de l’Avenir 2017: the main goal of Egan Bernal
He may not be well known yet by the general public but on the other side of the Atlantic it is common to hear his name as the successor of Nairo Quintana. Aged 20, the young Colombian Egan Bernal is already a phenomenon and will line up for the start of the 54th Tour de l’Avenir on August 18.
Already racing with a professional team – Androni-Giocatolli – Bernal knows French roads well. Last year he raced the Tour de l’Avenir finishing 4th overall 2’46” behind David Gaudu. His 2017 season in France is already a success with an overall win and two stages on the Tour de Savoie Mont-Blanc.
The former VTT rider has made the Tour de l’Avenir his big objective of his 2017 season. “I do not know if I will win or take a Top 5 or a Top 10. It is a complicated race because the way of racing if very different, but we can align a good team that will fight hard and put on a show” he recently told the Colombian Cycling Federation’s website. After Alfonso Flórez (1980), Martín Ramírez (1985), Nairo Quintana (2010), Esteban Chaves (2011) and Miguel Angel Lopez (2014), could Bernal be the sixth Colombian to add his name the the palmarès of the Tour de l’Avenir?
