Preview Time For The French National Team
The French pre-selection for the Tour de l’Avenir (August 18 to 27) is already in the Alps. National coach Pierre-Yves Chatelon called up a group of twelve riders for a July 16-21 training camp as part of a partnership between the French national teams and the Maurienne tourism organization.
Half of the team is preparing for the upcoming European championships in Denmark. The six other riders are expected to make up the backbone of the French team for the Tour de l’Avenir and are the most involved in this camp which primary purpose is the full reconnaissance of the three mountain stages of this “Tour” for youngsters.
In addition to the three high-altitude arrivals at Hauteluce – Les Saisies, Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise and Albiez-Montrond, high passes such as the Cormet de Roselend and the col de la Madeleine – all part of the race next month – will be on the menu for this week of training.
The official selection of the French team must be confirmed at the end of this training camp, which includes all six riders currently expected to be called up: Axel Journiaux (Vendée U), Victor Lafay (Bourg-Ain-Cyclisme), Valentin Madouas (UC Nantes-Atlantique), Aurélien Paret-Peintre (Chambéry CF) and two professional riders still eligible for the espoirs category: Franck Bonnamour (Fortunéo-Oscaro) and Mathias Le Turnier (Cofidis). A team that is heavy on puncheurs, motivated both by stage wins but also ambitions in the overall standings.
