Powless, The Climber From Sacramento

He not only rides with style, but also with undeniable class. Neilson Powless, 20, should be one of the main attractions on the next Tour de l’Avenir, that kicks off in Brittany (Loudéac) on August 18th and finishes on August 27th with three selective days through the Alps. The son of two professional triathletes from Sacramento, CA, Powless is a promising climber as his performance on the Gibraltar Road stage above Santa Barbara during last year’s Amgen Tour of California. That stage gave Julian Alaphilippe the overall lead in the race in which the young Powless took 9th overall.

This season has already confirmed his real talent. He was a stage winner in the tough Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux (Belgium), he wore the Maglia Rosa during the Baby Giro, and he is the USA U23 national champion (in addition to finishing 2nd place in the elite road race and 3rd in the elite TT).

For the winner of the final stage in the 2016 Tour de l’Avenir, the 2017 edition is an opportunity for a win at the highest international level in the U23 category, particularly in the absence of Adrien Costa who has decided to take a break from cycling. The young Californian will be the leader of Team USA.

On the Tour de l’Avenir 2017, Neilson Powless will be joined by Will Barta and Ian Garrison, his teammates from Axel Merckx’s Axeon – Hagens Berman team, Stephen Bassett (Silber Pro Cycling), Justin Oien (Caja Rural) and Sean Bennett (Jelly Belly), winner of the KOM classification on the last Tour de Bretagne.
